The Battle Against COVID-19: Where We’ve Been & What Lies Ahead

By Netsmart

Let’s learn from our mistakes rather than repeat them.

2020 proved an incredibly challenging year for all of us, largely due to the persistent COVID-19 pandemic. With that said, few groups have felt the strain and struggle as much as patients living in long-term care communities, family members unable to visit loved ones residing in these facilities, and the practitioners and staff who continue to work tirelessly to keep these patients safe.

During GPM’s virtual 2020 LTC Summit, Dr. Kenneth Kubitschek walked through important details about the novel coronavirus, including a review of its emergence, our missteps in controlling its spread, its aggressive contagion, and its overall impact on nursing home facilities and post-acute/long-term care providers. He spoke at length about the specific ways in which the virus works, the challenge of protecting aging and vulnerable populations, and how the public health crisis is far from over.

Dr. K specifically shared his personal story of navigating the COVID-19 pandemic as the medical director of Stonecreek Health & Rehabilitation, a nursing home in Asheville, North Carolina. He openly discussed what worked for him and his team, where their strategies fell short, and the impacts the virus has made on the community thus far. His candor brought every summit attendee into the fold of the conversation, and his words of wisdom left everyone braced for what’s still to come.
